A two-day CBCT masterclass covering Level 1 (core) and Level 2 (justification and image interpretation) training, led by Dr Lee Feinberg, Consultant Dental and Maxillofacial Radiologist, in partnership with Dentsply Sirona.
The course follows the CBCT training levels set out in the Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-ray Equipment (2nd edition, 2020). Level 1 and Level 2 content is integrated across both days, moving from the principles of CBCT and safe referral through to systematic interpretation, structured reporting and use in treatment planning.
The masterclass is delivered alongside the CADE Implant Year cohorts, with a small number of places open to dentists booking it on its own. The course fee is £795 + VAT, payable in full on booking.

Before you book: prerequisites
- GDC-registered dentist. Level 2 justification and interpretation training is for dentists only.
- IRMER radiography and radiation protection training (5 hours of verifiable CPD) completed within the last five years.

Please bring a laptop (Windows or Mac) with its charger. The CBCT viewing software will be installed for you on the day.
Learning outcomes
Level 1: core training
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Explain how CBCT images are acquired and how CBCT differs from 2D dental radiography and medical CT, including typical radiation doses
- Describe the indications for CBCT and its limitations in diagnosis and treatment planning
- Explain the radiation risks of CBCT and how exposures are optimised, including field of view, voxel size and exposure settings, to keep doses as low as reasonably practicable
- Apply current selection criteria to decide when CBCT is, and is not, appropriate
- Describe the requirements of IRR17 and IRMER17, and the responsibilities of the referrer, practitioner, operator and employer
- Provide the clinical information a referral needs for an exposure to be justified
- Recognise normal dentoalveolar and maxillofacial anatomy and common CBCT artefacts
Level 2: justification and image interpretation
Building on Level 1, by the end of the course you will be able to:
- Justify a CBCT exposure against a defined clinical question and the selection criteria, and record that justification
- Navigate CBCT datasets confidently in viewing software, including multiplanar reconstruction, reorientation, cross-sectional views and measurement
- Interpret small-volume dentoalveolar scans systematically, including the whole imaged volume and not only the area of interest
- Identify common pathology and anatomical variants relevant to implant, endodontic and surgical planning
- Recognise artefacts and technical limitations that reduce diagnostic confidence
- Write a clear, structured CBCT report
- Recognise findings that need a specialist radiological opinion, and refer appropriately
- Apply CBCT findings to prosthetically driven implant planning and guided surgery
GDC development outcomes
This course provides 14.5 hours of verifiable CPD and meets GDC development outcomes:
- A Effective communication with patients, the dental team and others, including the information needed for referral, justification and reporting
- C Maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice
- D Maintenance of skills, behaviours and attitudes which maintain patient confidence in you and the dental profession and put patients' interests first, including safe radiation practice
